Placement Ad for I Can.

"Founded by an Old Boy of the Class of 2009, I Can. has developed a unique concept that is increasingly being acknowledged as the first extra-curricular educational concept in modern educational history, to have emerged out of the east and to have the potential to place itself at the pinnacle of a global platform. As they scale up and prepare for a national launch, they are looking for quality additions to their team."

"We are not a conventional company and do not intend to be one." - Sergey Brin and
Larry Page (Founders - Google Inc.) No, we are not Google either. We are very small, very young, very hungry and foolish...

Education, globally and especially in India, is nowhere close to what it could and should be. With an ultimate goal to fill the gaps in the educational systems globally, we have built this organisation that aims to be a global comprehensive education service provider. We have started by conceptualising and executing an extra-curricular activity for high school and college students. This concept has received, with God's Grace, considerable recognition in the geographical areas where it has been executed. The Founder, because of this concept, became the youngest person in the history of the Indian School of Business (ISB) to have gained admission into the institution through the normal PGP application process. Although this post is primarily to look for talent, we welcome any comments, suggestions and questions that you may have.

The Concept: In the general progression of extra-curricular activities, Step 1 is Elocution, Step 2 is Debate and Step 3 is a concept called Model United Nations (MUN). MUN is an educational concept where schools and colleges simulate a UN Conference and students act as representatives of countries and discuss international political issues. MUN, much like debating, is a global rage; millions of schools and colleges all over the world participate in the activity. We have built what we believe is the Step 4 after Steps 1, 2 and 3. We have taken MUN, worked on what we believe are its limitations, added some new features to it and placed it in a corporate-political setting where we have initiated the concept of creating corporate-political simulations in schools and colleges. Here, students act as representatives of companies and political parties juxtaposed to those of countries. Needless to say, this relates to the students significantly as a very large chunk of students wants to enter the corporate/political/ancillary space. The concept has been designed as an experiential learning programme and is so extensive that there is something for everyone. This, among other things, helps the students to experience in a simulated manner, the career options that they may want to explore. Resultantly, they are equipped to make better career choices.

Furthermore, we take particular pride in promoting for profit and social entrepreneurship at the high school level in a very structured manner (which is a first, at least in this part of the world). To give a snapshot, there are on an average about 300 participants in one conference. They are divided into what we call "Corporate Houses", "Media Houses" and "Political Parties". Each corporate house and media house has many departments e.g. CEO, CFO, Advertising Department, Lobbyist. Like the above, there are two departments called the CSR Department and the Intrapreneurship Department. The aforementioned two names are essentially nomenclature where actually what they end up doing is social and for profit entrepreneurship, respectively. We invite young and established entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs who share with the students their stories and learning. The students are advised on how to indulge in social and for profit entrepreneurship while balancing the daily grind of school life. They are encouraged to develop their own ideas and these ideas are fine tuned. At the end of the conference, these ideas are presented and judged. The winning social idea and the winning commercial idea get funded and mentored by us. This funding and mentorship is available to the students till they turn 25. Moreover, any participant of the conference is permitted to approach us over the year with any idea that (s)he may have. We promise to mentor each and every idea that comes to us.

Execution, Past Performance and Current Status:

We believe that we have built an extracurricular activity that schools and colleges would like to include in their calendar every year, like they do debates and MUNs.

For the last two years, we have kept ourselves deliberately hushed up as we were in the process of registering our intellectual property and fine tuning our concept over a series of alpha and beta tests. It is only a few months ago that we allowed the media to cover our Conferences in the regions that we have operated test Conferences. We have conducted Conferences in Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh and Uttarakhand and have received, with God's grace, blockbuster response. Past participants have positively testified to our Conference's rewarding experience and so, many institutions have asked us to host the Conference with them again.

Please note, that we do not consider ourselves as having launched yet. Starting May 2014, we are launching a series of national Conferences leading up to a national launch of the concept in September. Starting September, we intend to go completely public with the concept. Details on how we have strategised our expansion plans over the next few months and years can be discussed over the due course of our interactions.

Scalability:

Speaking of this particular concept, we believe that 70,000 schools just within our country have the capacity to adopt it (with due variations of course). Simultaneously, we are working on launching it internationally (we are in the process of inviting delegations from Harvard College and Wharton to our national launch of the concept to explore how best we can take it to colleges).

Moreover, considering our goal of filling the gaps in the education systems globally, it must be noted that this first flagship concept is not the be all and end all for us. We have much more in the pipeline that we will endeavour to benefit the society at large with.

Funding and other Financials:

We have been funded by a consortium of angel investments and private placements (more are always welcome!).

Further details regarding funding, revenue streams and more can be discussed over the due course of our interactions.

Concept Video and Further Information:

We encourage you to have a look at our concept video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuw62lKHag4&hd=1. It can also be found on our website www.icanindia.org. If you do go online to browse through our pages, I would encourage you to also have a look at our Facebook page www.facebook.com/icanindia.org. This page shows the level of enthusiasm and the fan following that has been generated among students for the concept through our test Conferences.

Search for Talent:

This is a very unique, strategically advantageous and exciting time for anyone to join us. This is because we have thankfully crossed the stage where we would need to be very Spartan in our ways. At the same time, we are small enough for anyone to join in and call themselves part of the core team of this organisation. Moreover, in our capacity of being an early stage start-up, we offer a significantly enhanced quality of work experience and a very steep learning curve.

As we transition from a very early stage start-up to one that is relatively more established and heading towards a national launch within the year, we are looking to vigorously expand our team. We generally prefer persons between the age of 21 and 30, but that is obviously not rigid. Within the last month, we have recruited two students from IIM Calcutta and one highly accomplished individual with a background of niche event management. We are, however, still looking for passionate individuals that suit the following roles:

1. Operations and General Administration:

We are currently a very compact team. As we scale up, almost exponentially, our operations are enhancing geographically as well as in terms of complexity. We need someone who will play two roles:

Lead operations, much like a COO would. We would expect this person to work with our current operations team, build a bigger team and lead the various kinds of operations that we indulge in, primarily niche conferences that we conduct and will be conducting nationally this year and internationally starting next year. Moreover, for our conferences and otherwise, we would expect this person to set processes and checks such that a systematic infrastructure is built that can handle varying levels of demand and lead general internal administration.

We would expect this person to adopt international best practises regarding the same and set processes to manage personnel, finances and other internal administration related areas.

Requisite Skill Set: Leadership, enhanced analytical ability, organisational prowess and communication skills

Location: Based out of Delhi NCR/Dehradun with intensive travel.

Travel: Intensive travel, primarily domestic in 2014; Intensive domestic and international travel from 2015.

Annual CTC: Competitive up to INR 29,00,000 (including fixed and variable) (Please note that the total figure of INR 29,00,000 on the higher side is only indicative and not rigid. These figures have been stated uniformly for a variety of institutions. Since we believe that we will encounter a relatively more competent set of applicants at the ISB, we will be looking to find someone to whom we would offer a package that would be towards the higher end of the bracket, if not even beyond it).

Additional Comments:

a) Since we are a very young and compact team, this person would be a part of the most senior strata of the organisation (not including mentors, fellows and intellectual/operational associates) and we would look towards adorning this person with the title of CxO in the months to come.

b) As we are a start-up we are looking for people who are not only enhanced leaders but who are also doers. We are too small to afford, anyone who is good only at only "getting things done" but not doing it him or herself when the need arises. We are looking for someone who will, at least for a year, get his or her hands dirty and then as we transition into the next phase of growth, we could manage with a more manager like attitude.

Moreover, needless to say, as we are a start-up, more than anything else, we are looking for a fire in the belly and an outrageously aggressive work attitude.

2. Communications and Business Development:

We are swiftly moving towards a national launch where we are associating with the best names in the education space and otherwise. We are working with the country's cream schools, the country's best IP and corporate lawyers and other service providers. We are in the process of forming associations with niche national and international organisations and individuals in capacity of intellectual/operational associates and mentors/fellows respectively. We are looking for a person who can develop and maintain relations with the creme de la creme of industry. Over time develop and lead a team to this effect.

Requisite Skill Set: Enhanced interpersonal skills, Excellent verbal and written communication skills, Social skills, knowledge of presentation software

Location: Based out of Delhi NCR/Dehradun with intensive travel

Travel: 2014 will have Intensive travel within India and U.S.A; 2015 onwards we will expect intensive domestic and international travel from you.

Annual CTC: Competitive up to INR 29,00,000 (including fixed and variable) (Please note that the total figure of INR 29,00,000 on the higher side is only indicative and not rigid. Please read Profile 2. Profile 3 is exactly the same as Profile 2 (barring the additional comments) with a change in the Annual CTC.

4. Social and Commercial Entrepreneurship:

This comes in as our most unique offer. As mentioned earlier, among other things, we promote social and commercial entrepreneurship in ways more than one. We see the immense potential of growth within this space. We are looking for a person who would:

Lead the conceptual and operational enhancement of the promotion of social and commercial entrepreneurship through our Conferences and beyond Lead the conceptualisation and execution of a national (and starting next year, international) social service programme that we intend to launch in September

In essence, this role is for someone who is extremely entrepreneurial in nature as it involves starting a quasi vertical from scratch. This role provides a holistic, 360 degree experience and requires extreme resourcefulness and perseverance.

Requisite Skill Set: A 360 degree skill set, essentially enhanced leadership skills, communication skills, creativity, execution and operational skills, attention to detail

Location: Based out of Delhi NCR/Dehradun with intensive travel

Travel: Intensive travel, primarily domestic in 2014; intensive domestic and international travel from 2015.

5. Operations Associate:

Managing excels, paperwork and (not mandatory) designing work for events and Conferences

Requisite Skill Set: Strong analytical ability, arithmetic ability, proficiency with MS Excel/equivalent, (not mandatory) finesse with digital designing.

Location: Based out of Delhi NCR/Dehradun with intensive travel.

Travel: Intensive travel, primarily domestic in 2014; Intensive domestic and international travel from 2015.

Annual CTC: Competitive up to INR 7,20,000 (including fixed and variable).

Additional Comments:

The description of work covers only the primary work. As we are a start-up, the individual should be comfortable with a heterogeneous involvement within the organisation, including but not restricted to event management.
