John Martyn

John Arthur King Martyn came to India, from Harrow, in 1935 to be the first Deputy Headmaster of the Doon School under Headmaster Arthur E Foot. He was a respected mentor and guide to many generations of Doon School Boys, and Headmaster of Doon for 18 years.

When he died in 1985, his wife (Mady Martyn), with the help of many well-wishers, set up a charitable trust in his name. The primary objective of the John Martyn Memorial Trust is to provide an example of what primary education in India should be.

This example is provided by the John Martyn Memorial School at Salangaon, below the Mussoorie Road, North of Dehra Dun. There, 160 children are getting a free primary education. To learn more about the trust and how you can help, go to their website at -
